Festival: Maleny Celebration of Books

Festival guest ABC Radio’s Kate Evans loves nothing better than chatting with people about books. Join her in conversation with three leading Australian authors. Multi-award winning writerTrent Dalton will talk about his debut literary fiction novel, Boy Swallows Universe. He will be joined by 2018 Stella Prize shortlisted author Mirandi Riwoe discussing her award-winning novella The Fish Girl and Sally Piper will talk about her second novel The Geography of Friendship.

Seminar: Novel Writing - Toning a saggy middle

Novels often stall in the middle section as writers either dry up with ideas or the plot or depth of characterisation has not been sufficient to sustain the story. This Queensland Writers Centre seminar will assist participants to identify causes of a saggy middle and discover ways of overcoming it so that their story finds new narrative energy.

Workshop: Making the Shortlist with Sally Piper and Cass Moriarty

This one-day workshop assists participants to ensure their manuscript is structurally at its best for submission to publishers, competitions and awards. Participative workshopping includes practical exercises, group work and discussions based around the following subjects: identifying the central question or theme of a novel and its main and secondary characters; tips for discerning a novel’s strengths and weaknesses and interrogating the plot’s external and emotional arc; submission and formatting guidelines; expectations of judges and publishers; and networking opportunities.
