Growing up in Victoria I’d see echidna all the time, but this is the first one I’ve seen in all the years I’ve been living in Queensland, and it’s road kill. 😢 #echidna #spinyanteater #monotremes #egglayingmammal #nativeaustraliananimals

Botanists amongst you, any idea what this gorgeous tree is called? It produces striking orange blooms in its upper canopy every year around now and the rainbow lorikeet spend most of the day getting plastered on its nectar.🤔(@tweak.and.grow - I couldn’t find it in the super power book) #mysterytree

This cone is from a Bunya pine, the nut of which was a staple food of Australia’s First People for millennia. This one weighed about 8kg and I was thankful it didn’t land on my head🤕 #bunyapine #bunyanut

The UK/Ireland edition of THE GEOGRAPHY OF FRIENDSHIP is out of the box and in bookstores today! After beginning this writing malarkey in the UK, where I lived for 8 years, it seems a fitting tribute that what eventually evolved from those fledgling attempts has found its way back there. Thank you @legendpress for these author copies, which I received today and have added to the sense of celebration 20,000km away! #thegeographyoffriendship #publicationday

This novel is the work of a genius and you can’t read it and not be altered about the way you think about trees, the environment and the human intersection with both. It’s another reminder that the planet is one big interconnected system upon which all species depend for their existence and if one species - humans - takes more than its share then the whole system eventually breaks down. I know we Australians don’t have to look much further than the Murray-Darling Basin to realize that, but if you want to get all the feels for the passion and courage of environmental activists and the determination and cruelty of those in power who they (mostly) peacefully campaign against, then read The Overstory. Honestly, it’s one of the most brilliantly crafted books I’ve ever read. 💚📚#richardpowers #theoverstory @wmheinemann

These 100% biodegradable Eco Napkins are a genius idea! Swipe ⬅️ to watch the magic. They’re made from renewable timber and bamboo and are chemical free. Now part of my standard bushwalking kit, and to look posh after meals. @econapkin

We’re all imperfect in various and numerous ways and yet some imperfections (scars, largeness, dwarfism) aren’t seen as just the great variety of what makes up humanity. This book by Lee Kofman, which was launched @avidreader last night, explores why beauty and diversity are often unfortunately opposed. @affirmpress #imperfect #leekofman

Out on 1st February 2019 - The Geography of Friendship by @sally.piper.writer

Women’s Weekly Book Club Great Read

When three women set off on a hike through the wilderness they are anticipating the adventure of a lifetime. Over the next five days, as they face up to the challenging terrain, it soon becomes clear they are not alone.

Lisa, Samantha and Nicole have known each other since school. Lisa is a fighter, Samantha a peacekeeper and Nicole a rule follower. United they bring out the best in one another.
Only once it is too late for them to turn back do they appreciate the danger they are in. Their friendship is tested, and each of them must make a choice that will change their lives forever. ‘The atmosphere in the Geography of Friendship is so charged, I often found myself clenching my jaw and getting goosebumps as I read. The descriptions of the Australian bush are so vibrant and evocative… The bush feels alive in this book – vast, daunting and full of lurking dangers… Heartbreakingly honest and fiercely emotional… a remarkable book that is bound to appeal to fans of Jane Harper and Liane Moriarty’ Honey

New year, new goals. If you’re a writer and one of your goals is to get that manuscript ready for submission to a competition or publisher, then this 3-hour workshop I’m delivering for @qldwriters might be for you. Equally, this workshop would also help if you’ve reached a point in your story where it, and you, have run out of narrative energy and you’re stuck for ways to bring back the narrative drive. The workshop will be held at QWC on Saturday 2nd February between 2-5pm. Bookings essential. My last read for 2018 - Lenny’s Book of Everything by Karen Foxlee. This is a unique and big-hearted story about the power of childhood wonder and imagination in helping children navigate the harsh realities of the adult word. Told with such grace and wit, there’s not a character or moment out of place in this superb story. @karenfoxleeauthor #lennysbookofeverything @allenandunwin #booksiloved

The eucalypts are shedding at the moment and the tracks are littered with their bark. I’d love to collect it up and paper a wall with it! It also brings to mind this fantastic book with it’s gorgeous cover ➡️ ‘Where the Trees Were’ by Inga Simpson. Inga has a deft touch in writing the Australian landscape, and in this novel she considers the significance of carved trees sacred to Indigenous Australians and the threats white Australians might believe they pose if found on land they own. Subtle but sweeping in its consideration of how choices made in childhood shape the adults we become. @birdtree_ing @hachetteaus #wherethetreeswere #ingasimpson

This is an extraordinary book and while Ava, the character at its heart who has Rett Syndrome, is unable to speak, the author masterfully brings the words that are in her head onto the page. And through them we learn that Ava is not just frustrated by her inability to express herself, she is also whip-smart funny, clever, sassy and determined. This is a rare and brave book that boldly gives voice to the voiceless so that we might all better understand what it is to live not being heard. For a 10-year-old or a great grandparent, and everyone inbetween. 💙📚@samanthawheelerauthor @uqpbooks #everythingiveneversaid #samanthawheeler #booksiloved
